Now I was wondering on the system’s integrity.
First step was checking /var/log/auth.log
To do some quick’n'dirty check I’ve ran the following command

grep “Invalid user” /var/log/auth.log | less

This resulted in quite a nice list:

As long as you have a towel, there’s no need to panic!
I studied the log in detail and there were luckily no successful logins other than my own (with a valid keypair).

Quick solution to do a first line of defense:

sudo apt-get install denyhosts

DenyHosts:

DenyHosts is a script intended to be run by Linux system administrators to help thwart SSH server attacks (also known as dictionary based attacks and brute force attacks).

Now the only thing I needed to do next was configure DenyHosts so that it’ll sync the known blocked ip’s from the official DenyHosts database.
How to do this is well explained in the configuration file.

sudo nano /etc/denyhosts.conf

You can set the email, purge and sync options.
Adjust like you want.

After not such a long time you can list the denied hosts as follows:

sudo less /etc/hosts.deny

To solve this, simply boot into Ubuntu and edit the /etc/default/rcS file as sudo and change the UTC value from yes to no.
It should look like this

TMPTIME=0
SULOGIN=no
DELAYLOGIN=no
UTC=no #Set according to your system (BIOS) clock.
VERBOSE=no
EDITMOTD=yes
FSCKFIX=no

These values are being used by the scripts at /etc/rcS.d/ that get invoked during boot (even in single user mode)

To be clear, this is not an Ubuntu error. It is simply the Windows that never assumes the system-clock to be in UTC.

If you wish to adjust this in the Windows installation execute regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TimeZoneInformation

Change the RealTimeIsUniversal value to 1.

Wanted:
People who want to help out at the Ubuntu booth during the Dipro-fair is in Ghent on January 30, 2011.
If you’re not able to attend the full day, some hours of help are always welcome as well.

Profile:
You don’t have to be an Ubuntu/Linux expert.
If you can testify about your experiences and suggest to Windows-programs,
can already make a difference.
Most people we lend a word on the fair, have none or little of Ubuntu/Linux/Computer experience.

Fun fact:
As an exhibitor you don’t have to pay the entrance fee, but between helping out, you can take our time to look around and find awesome deals.

How:
Add your name to the ubuntu-wiki page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Ghent_2011-01-31
OR
Let me know trough mail ubuntu@mimor.be

Please in both of these cases, mention whether you’ll be helping out a full day or several hours.
That’s all you need to do.
If you can provide items such as demolaptop(s), camera, etc. .. you may also add it to the wiki page.

Hope to see you soon.

=====================================

Gezocht:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BelgianTeam/ComputerFairs/Ghent_2011-01-31
OF
Laat het me weten via mail op ubuntu@mimor.be

Mvg,

It’s official! There will be a Release Party for the Ubunu 10.04 (codename Lucid Lynx) in Ghent.

I’ve just send out the news to the mailing list of Ubuntu-be and the Whitespace to confirm that i’ll organise the release party for the upcoming LTS version of Ubuntu.
The event will take place Thursday the 13th of May in the Whitespace.
I’m still looking for people whom have some knowledge of something Ubuntu-related and have the guts to give a lightningtalk or a demo.
At the moment of writing, I’ve had 1 confirmation from a guy with Balls! Mandel.
He did a talk about desktopcouch at fosdem this year, and will bring an improved version of that to the Release party.
If you have questions, let me know.
I’m available at the #Ubuntu-be channel on freenode, or just PM me (mimor) or use the comment section below.

The sent mail in English:

Hello to all.
>
> I organize a RP on the 13th of May in honor of the Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid)
> release.
> This is indeed a Thursday but that’s an official holiday and lot’s of
> the people don’t have to work on Friday.
> What time it’ll take place is yet to be decided.
>
> The RP will take place in the Whitespace (Blekerijstraat 75, Gent,
> Belgium)
> For people wondering what the Whitespace is: http://0×20.be
>
> The space has: power, network, internet, drinks, snacks, beamer, couches
> and I hope we can repair the coffee-machine by then.
> People whom want something else, mention it.
>
> The program is still under construction.
> This moment, my receipt looks like this:
>
> Around 13h we’ll serve a light meet & greet to loosen up the nerves.
> Next, we’ll stimulate the senses wit a series of lightning talks
> accompanied by a spicy serving of freshly cut tips.
> As the Spécial-du-chéf, you can enjoy some trial-and-error-sauce topped
> hands-on sessions.
>
> This part is for sure, but the rest is still work in progress!
>
> This is the rest:
>
> – design of Posters, flyers and web-banners
> – do you know someone, or want to present something yourself? Go for it
> & let me know.
> – spread the word! To your friends, colleagues, your student-club, etc..
> – the pleasure to have YOU with us!
>
> Regards,
>
> Mike Morraye

Or in Dutch:

>
> Hallo iedereen.
>
>
> Dit stuk is zeker, de rest is work in progress!
>
> Hier dus de rest:
>
> – ontwerp Poster & flyer en/of web-banners?
> – ken je iemand, of wil je zelf iets presenteren. Go for it & let me
> know.
> – Spread the word!
> studentenclub, etc…
> – het genoegen dat JIJ er ook bent!
>
> Mvg,
>
> Mike Morraye

There’s a lot of evil things on the Internet if you know where to look for them. Phishing websites collect banking credentials; mule recruitment websites entice people into money laundering; fake escrow sites defraud the winners of online auctions; fake banks hold the cash for fake African dictators; and there are even Ponzi scheme websites where (almost) everyone knows that they’re a scam. csync is a lightweight utility to synchronize files between two directories on a system or between multiple systems.
It synchronizes bidirectionally and allows the user to keep two copies of files and directories in sync. csync uses widely adopted protocols, such as smb or sftp, so that there is no need for a server component. It is a user-level program which means you don’t need to be a superuser or administrator.
Together with a Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM), the intent is to provide Roaming Home Directories for Linux.

This talk presents the SyncML protocol, introduces the Synthesis SyncML engine (developed since 2000, open sourced 2009) and outlines how SyncEvolution is used as the synchronization solution in Moblin, GNOME and other Linux desktop systems – stay tuned for more news about this.
SyncEvolution is meant to be a cross-platform solution, therefore this talk would be suitable for the cross-desktop developer room.
Direct synchronization with other mobile devices is the main new feature in the upcoming Moblin 1.0 release. It will be covered in this talk for the first time.
SyncEvolution is a tool that synchronizes personal information management (PIM) data like contacts, calenders, tasks, and memos using the SyncML information synchronization standard. SyncEvolution compiled for GNOME’s Evolution supports all of these data items. Compiled for Nokia 770/800/810 Internet Tablets, Mac OS X and the iPhone (only 0.7), it supports synchronizing the system address book. The command-line tool ‘syncevolution’ (compiled separately for each of these platforms) executes the synchronization. In addition, there is the GTK “sync-UI”. The external Genesis is a graphical frontend for SyncEvolution written in PyGTK. The GUIs make SyncEvolution accessible without having to use a command line and provides graphical feedback of transaction results.
SyncEvolution was written to have a small, reliable solution for Evolution PIM data synchronization without reinventing the wheel. SyncML is the established industry standard and Funambol has kindly provided their source code under the GPL, so there was already an existing code base for client and server development. During SyncEvolution’s development special attention was paid to automated testing and coverage of corner cases of the SyncML, vCard and iCalendar standards to ensure that no data gets lost or mangled.
The focus right now is to deliver the best possible SyncML client for Moblin and Linux. With the switch to the Synthesis SyncML Engine it will be easier to also implement a server mode and direct device-to-device synchronization – this is already working in the 1.0 alpha release.

Today, I bought my second 22″ Widescreen (Medion) monitor for only €150.
With its maximum resolution of 1680×1050, contrast of 1000:1 and a 5 ms reaction speed, it makes just a simple yet perfect addition to my desk.
This is one of the devices that just does the trick.
If I had spend 35 Euro more, I could have bought a Full-HD 23″ monitor from samsung… but I just can’t find a purpose for the Full-HD function and the 23″ would denigrate my other (also a 22″) screen.
It’s main purpose will be browsing, coding and a little bit gaming or designing.

I’m proud to present, my new screen (middle) functioning as a second screen for my portable (Dell Latitude D820).

I had to disable Compis Fusion on my laptop so that I could disable screen monitoring on the dual-head.

I installed Ubuntu Server 8.04 inside a VirtualBox (v 2.4.1_OSE) virtual machine.
The installation went smooth, but when I wanted to boot into my Ubuntu Server, it returned the following error right after GRUB:

This kernel requires the following features not present on the cpu: 0:6
Unable to boot – please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU

Screenshot or it didn’t happen?

How to solve:

This can be easily resolved by enabling the PAE/NX option in the virtual machine’s settings.
This will expose the PAE of your CPU to the virtual machine.

Just:

go to the homescreen of Virtualbox

select your virtual machine

click the ‘settings’ button on top of the screen

click the tab ‘Advanced’

check the box next to ‘PAE/NX’

Like in this screenshot:

Now, you can fire up your virtual machine again, and it will start up without this error.

As you may know, Belgium has 3 native languages: French, German and Dutch.
Lately, people tend to make a big fuzz about this.
Political party’s started creating diversity based on these languages to use this in their own advantage (votes).
The media has added its share to this too.

I personally don’t mind all these easy and low ways of getting attention.
But now the discussion has appeared as a burden inside our Ubuntu-be LUG as well.

We have this policy that you can talk French, Dutch, German and English as you please.
As a (logical) result, most of the communication has been done in English.
By doing so, we can reach most of the users.
If someone sends a mail to the mailing in one of the three other languages, no one bothers.
But the pool of people that understands the message is significantly lower.

In the mailing list this has now been discussed as a problem.
There was a reaction from someone on our mailing list:

Now let me try to translate this to English:

1. The consequent use of English.
This is Belgium, and there are 3 official languages: Dutch, French and German.
The use of English is thus complete ridiculous. Even more because a larger group of people can't even write decent English. (Yes, I'm a language purist)
Aren't you bilingual? Or are there people on the list that are not?
I can understand, but that brings me immediately at point 2.

2. Ubuntu-be: Why not split into Ubuntu-vla and Ubuntu-wal as an example)?
This would facilitate things, as Flanders (vla) and Walons (wal) , to name something, have totally different company/business cultures. (I worked in both parts of the country)

So I started thinking about this and got to the conclusion: “Should we even care?”
For what I’m concerned, things are fine like they are.
That seemed to be the same conclusion as someone else who replied:

Also, considering that we barely have enough volunteers now, how do you
expect us to have enough volunteers if we split up in 4 or more
different groups?

To give one point-of-reference: Jean, who's been coordinating most of
the computer fair booths recently, is French-speaking natively, but
living in Flanders (and he speaks Dutch very well!). Why would we want
him to limit his work to Flanders, and not Wallonia or Brussels?

He nailed it!
Why are grownups even discussing such a trivial thing?
In Belgium, we all learned English and French, so I can’t see a difficulty in a multilingual community.
Au contraire, this could be a positive point as our work will be more useful to other LUG’s.

But perhaps I’m wrong.
I wonder if there are other LUG’s out there that have the same problem?
Do people in Quebec have issues with this? Do people from the middle-east have issues like this? (they have a lot of dialects)
It would be nice get the opinion or the results from similar problems inside Ubuntu/Linux LUG’s.

If you never have heard of Belgium before, this is it:

Due to inactivity the last month on the Ubuntu-be mailing list, I had some catching up to do on the huge list of unread mails.
Amongst them I found this mail from Pierre Buyle:

Hi,

for those requesting a Forum for Ubuntu-be, there is an alternative
solution (which has already been discussed in the past). Gmane
provides two web interfaces for our mailing list. A blog-like one at
http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.region.belgium and a threaded
one at http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.ubuntu.region.belgium.

In addition, I registered the mailing list for archiving on Nabble
which also provides an forum like web interface at
http://n2.nabble.com/Ubuntu-be-f3354669.html

These three interface allow one to follow activities on the mailing
list without dealing with it as a bunch of mail. Both Gmane and Nabble
allow posting to the list through the Web interface (only for
subscribed user registered there).

So, if you’re interested in following the Ubuntu-be mailing list, you can easily do so without the ‘hassle’ of subscribing to it.
It’s also a perfect way to check it out for a while, as you don’t receive all these mails in your mailbox.

I have to say, it’s the first time I’ve seen the integrated nabble forum in action, and have to agree that it’s awesome.
Also the blog-styled layout of gmane is making the mailing list (more) enjoyable to read.

Of course, you can also just send a mail to the ubuntu-be mailing list.
Warning: This is a public medium! If you want to send messages to this list you’ll have to register first through https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-be. Keep into consideration that every message posted will be visible in the public archives!

I’m organizing a release-party for the Ubuntu-be community @Curieuze Neuze in Ghent.
So far it’s not yet confirmed to go on
I’ve got a meeting with Philip (the owner) next Saturday 25/04 to ask him if we can get it happen there, and exchange our expectations.
So far it has been announced on the ubunu-be mailing list, and discussed on #ubuntu-be (freenode).

Interested people can still vote for a date on doodle. This party is not intended for people new to Linux.
It’s not that we don’t want those people to come, but merely a matter of not the right time & place for it because we will not be equipped to give demo’s or info-sessions.
If you’re new to linux or ubuntu and want to know more about it, you can always keep an eye on the FutureEvents section of our wikipage.
For example: The IndyMedia release-party is open for people seeking information on Linux/Ubuntu.

That said.. it’s 12:05 AM -> the Jaunty final release is off the leash!
